Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy

SDR is an intensive neurosurgical technique that involves cutting the sensory nerve roots at the spinal cord level. It is suitable for select children with spasticity of the lower limbs. It is a reasonably new and still somewhat controversial technique.

It is a permanent and non-reversible intervention. Long-term benefits and known side effects are not yet available.

A strong commitment to long-term intensive therapy is required after surgery in order to maximise effectiveness.

Alternative interventions include:

• Botulinum toxin and injections
• Baclofen
• Orthopaedic surgery
