Aus-By-Cycle Update - 20 August 2008

We are now 2/3 of the way though our charity bicycle ride around the Australian mainland we have riden 10,400.00 kms. Our trip and CP Australia fundraiser commenced on the first of May 2008 on a chilly morning in Canberra. We had a small send off breakfast in Lenox Gardens Canberra where Family, work colleges and friends all joined in a light breki before our 7.30 departure. It was a a moving moment for everyone as we rode away on our bicycles loaded with equipment that would be our lives for the next eight months. There was no looking back as we followed the road to Sydney then up the east coast to cairns then across to Normanton then down to Cloncurry across to Mount Isa, Katherine, Kununara, Broome then down the WA coast to Perth where we are currently having a few days rest.

The trip has been an amazing experience taking us though some of the most remarkable parts of the Australian lanscape. Because we travel so slowly (average aprox 20kph ) we are able to focus on the country side clearly and also hear and smell what it has to offer. We have peddaled our way through vast temperature changes and seen the time shift slowly as we have moved across the curve of the earth.

Many people have been very kind showing their interest and support of what we are doing by waving, tooting and many have made cash donations to our chosen charity (CP Australia). If we are offered free camping or accomodation we inject cash to the same value into the funraising tin. Several corporations have also shown their support with some one-off payments and some promised on completion of the trip.

To date we are aprox 20 days ahead of our original schedule and expect to be back in Canberra early in December.
